Edward, there is a lot of merit to your comment. However, there is a lot of merit to protecting people with unpopular views from persecution and hysterical whims such as McCathyism. Generically speaking, McCarthyism is not a trait of right or left. I don't know how one squares that circle.

Sorry, but tenure is an outdated tool and should be done away with. Having worked in high ed, I have seen a number of profs who get lazy once they get tenure. In fact we were paying 6 profs not to work because they were so bad but they had tenure and we couldn't fire them. That does not help anyone but the profs because students still pay their the cost to keep those profs even if they gain nothing for their tuition dollars.

Profs need to compete just like everyone else, tenure should be done away with. A state university prof can make over $100k after 10 years on the job, that doesn't mean they have kept up with the time or are teaching anything of value. They could just be pushing their ideology, where is the benefit in that in which you can't really replace them? There is zero benefit to the user of the service, the student population and in the end the school will become a joke.

Also, it would help if profs were not so political, even with tenure, I saw far more politics internally than I have in any corporation.
